ADULTING CORRECTLY – HOW SO?

Being an adult! When I was a child I could not wait to grow up and do the whole “adulting” thing. Now that I am in my 20’s there are times I would love to be a child again. A few things I would change over for sure. But hey you do the best with what you have and like my mom used to say if wishes were horses beggars would ride them. I don’t even think I fully understood the saying, to be honest with you.

There are so many things expected of the average adult. None of which you are actually aware of until you have that one auntie breathing down your neck asking why “you couldn’t act more like the adult you are”! Do you ever wish that your school curriculum included more things about the adult world rather than enthalpy and entropy?  I mean how is knowing these things helped me to not get myself in debt? or to know about credit scores and bills and all the other adult things that are likely to give you anxiety just thinking about it.  Maybe it is not the school’s responsibility but your parents, guardians and adults around you?

CHILDREN RAISING CHILDREN

But maybe we sometimes don’t grow up to know these things because we are in such a race to be adults that we miss the lesson as kids; therefore becoming adults by age and not in maturity or wisdom. And so we are now in the age of “Children raising children” a phrase that I have heard too often a time. This is normally in reference to young teen parents, but just because someone is older does not necessarily mean they are an “adult” literally.

ADULTING CORRECTLY

What does it mean to adult correctly?

So what does it mean to adult correctly? paying your bills on time? not being late? looking as if you have your things together? All of these things may help but I don’t think there is one template for how to do this excellently. In fact, I believe that it is something that we figure out as we go along with what life has in store for us. Sometimes you will get it right and sometimes not so much. When you do mess up it is important to have the maturity to admit to it, apologise and take the necessary steps moved forward and to do better.

WISDOM

The wise Erykah Badu said, “the man who knows something knows that he knows nothing at all”. Even though there is no perfect template as to how to be an adult, there is always someone ahead of you who has been there, done that. From these people, we are to take lessons from. I am a firm believer that some mistakes are made so that we don’t have to make them. So listen to advice and take on criticism and discipline well. It will only benefit you and set you on the right path. Another thing my mom used to say, only those that love you correct you. If a parent does not correct a child’s ill behaviour and allows the child to become an adult with that mannerism or lack thereof, they only set the child up for failure in the adult world.

STRIDE INTO PURPOSE

What does it mean to adult correctly?

Finally, I just want to let you know there is no perfect way to become the right adult or as I put it adulting correctly. we are all figuring it out as we go along. Do not look left or right to see what someone is doing and compare your progress, you don’t even have the same name how do you think you will walk the same paths? Take your time and stride into your purpose. it is much better than rushing and losing yourself and loved ones along the way.

As always here is the quote for the week.

“Fall in love with the process of becoming the very best version of yourself”.
